Hurricane Katrina Animal Relief

Carolina Canines for Service together with Carolina Animal Relief Effort (C.A.R.E.) and numerous businesses in and around Wilmington collaborated to bring 21 cats and 32 dogs from the Katrina heurricane region to Wilmington, NC. Animals began arriving early October and will be initially cared for in a facility and then placed into foster care while the owners of the animals are searched for.

If owners are ready to be reunited with their animals, transportation will be arranged to return the animals to their owners. The goal is to identify and reunite as many owners and animals as possible.

If owners are ready to be reunited with their animals, transportation will be arranged to return the animals to their owners. The goal is to identify and reunite as many owners and animals as possible.

Katrina Animal Relief will place the animals in foster care for up to 180 days while working to reunite the animal with it's owner. Hundreds of volunteers have come together to care for the animals while in the facility working 3 shifts per day, 7 days a week to feed, walk, water, clean kennels and give the dogs and cats much needed love and affection. Their daily care takes an average of 85 volunteer hours!

The relief effort is supported financially by donations separate from Carolina Canines for Service. Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and businesses providing monetary or product donations.

The real miracle of this effort if the reuniting. Owners have been identified for 11 dogs and at least 9 cats. Five of the dogs were transported to their owners on October 30, 2005!! Many of the animals need foster care while their owners seek new housing. And, the animals that owners have not been found will need to be fostered. Animals will not be released for adoption until at least January 15th, 2006. Foster applications for dogs or cats are available by contacting katrina@carolinacanines.org or calling 910-362-8194.
