Who is Eligible for a Service Dog?

Carolina Canines for Service, Inc. seeks to place service dogs with individuals who experience functional limitations due to a variety of disabling conditions which include, but are not limited to the following:
Cerebral palsy Spinal cord injury
Multiple sclerosis Stroke/Traumatic brain injury
Seizure Disorders Severe heart conditions
Muscular dystrophy Arthritis
Spina bifida Ataxia/poor balance
Applicants are screened to determine their individual needs and ability to benefit from a service dog, as well as their ability to provide a suitable home and on-going care for a service dog. Once accepted, the applicant’s name is placed on the Applicant Waiting List.

Due to the extensive training time for each service dog (18-24 months in basic training and 6-12 months in advanced training) there is often a substantial wait for just the right dog to meet each applicant’s needs. Our projection is currently a wait of 2-3 years. Some service dog programs across the country have waits of up to 7 years. Many service dog programs charge recipients for their dogs from $2,000 to $12,000. Carolina Canines For Service, Inc. places dogs at NO COST to the recipient!

An applicant becomes a candidate for a service dog once the preliminary match is made and team training is arranged. They officially become a recipient after successfully completing team training and pass a certificate test. Upon graduation from team training, the individual becomes a partner with a certified service dog.
